700 People Killed in Syrian Riot
World News Friday, May 13th, 2011 Follow @summnewspaperSyrian security forces killed more than 700 people and arrested thousands of others, and bombed the cities with the indiscriminate crackdown against protesters, says International Commission of Jurists (ICJ), Thursday (12/05/2011).
ICJ, a panel of lawyers and senior judges from around the world with offices in Geneva, said the attacks committed by security forces against civilians are crimes under international law.
The group said it obtained a description of the crackdown were from lawyers and human rights defenders in Syria.
Damascus government banned foreign journalists since launched a crackdown on the protests that confirmation independent are difficult to obtain.
“More than 700 people reportedly killed and hundreds of people missing since Syrian forces begin crackdown on March 15 in Daraa, Homs, Banias, and other cities,” the ICJ said in a statement.
“ICJ continues to receive credible reports indicating that the corpse was left on the street for days and the injured victims prevented to medical care, he said.
“In addition, a number of people trying to leave the country hunted down and banned from doing so by security agencies at the border,” he added.
The government blames the violence on “armed criminal gangs” and described the protest movement as a conspiracy.
Syria hit by protests since mid-March that has never happened before, which requires major reforms in dominated country the Baath Party for almost 50 years.
Human rights groups accuse the Syrian security forces killed hundreds of civilians in a crackdown against peaceful demonstrations.
According to them, thousands of Syrians were arrested and dozens were missing after a demonstration demanding political freedom and end to corruption erupted nearly six weeks ago.
The government announced a series of reform measures in an effort to calm the protesters, including the release of prisoners and plans to make new laws about licensing for media and political parties.
